Welcome this is Pornography

The last album of a dark trilogy :#TimsTwitterListeningParty
1/4 And then there were three…

I’ve been thinking a great deal about this record and time. Trying to put myself back in the state of mind when we made it. It’s not that simple a process to recall the feelings of the 23-year-old me at 61! #TimsTwitterListeningParty pic.twitter.com/H9fhZO8KBa
2/4 I think there’s that undeniable nihilism on the surface but underneath it all is the faint glimmer of hope. There had to be .Certainly there’s a punk romanticism attached to all the annihilation and despair #TimsTwitterListeningParty
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
3/4 but I sincerely think with the benefit of many years hindsight we were searching for a way forward. Out of the desperation we felt. In the end, it happened anyway. #TimsTwitterListeningParty

4/4 This is Pornography , In all its monolithic grandeur
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
It’s pertinent to remember that when this first came out it wasn’t immediately hailed as groundbreaking ! Haha! #TimsTwitterListeningParty
One Hundred Years: The first Cure song I ever played keyboards on ! We used the Boss DR Rythmn DR-55 drum machine for the drums We fed it out into two amps ( bass /Guitar) for the snare and Kick drum respectively then recorded that. #TimsTwitterListeningParty
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
Live this song was a little dangerous! I had to leap off the kit, then manically run to the front of the stage whilst avoiding being hit on the head by the descending screen that cut off the kit from the audience’s view while I played the keys ! #TimsTwitterListeningParty
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
For the Pornography tour, we took a reel to reel tape machine for the drum track on One hundred years and for background sounds on the track Pornography. The first time we hadn’t played everything you heard from the stage live. Now its commonplace #TimsTwitterListeningParty

A Short Term Effect: The last record we had made before this was Charlotte sometimes. I loved the drum sound Mike Hedges got for that. So with Phil Thornalley, we got another great drum sound, massive and giant, it defines the album for me .#TimsTwitterListeningParty

RAK studios in St Johns Wood, London.Where we recorded Pornography. #TimsTwitterListeningParty pic.twitter.com/hHL15Fn4bl

swirling psychedelia, hallucinatory in its quality A Short Term Effect spoke to some of what was going on with us at the time. I think with the death of my Mother and Roberts Grandmother we were on a very desperate track. #TimsTwitterListeningParty

The start of the infamous “ Beer sculpture “ We kept every can or bottle we drank making Pornography until the end. This looks to be about day 4, we were there for a long time… #TimsTwitterListeningParty pic.twitter.com/49DVhUp291

The Hanging Garden. This song finally came together for me once I sorted out the right beat with floor tom then with Robert and Simon that became a ferocious magic. The only single from the album. The video was filmed at night it was incredibly cold! #TimsTwitterListeningParty
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
I was able to get that great pounding drums sound for hanging Garden here in RAK studio one big main room. #TimsTwitterListeningParty pic.twitter.com/tj0cwzxDmk

Phil at the controls! We were young 23 but Phil was even younger (21?) when he recorded us at Rak! #TimsTwitterListeningParty pic.twitter.com/AhqzpM326p

Siamese twins: We paid a visit to the Ray Man store in London The percussion instruments there were inspirational, we bought some finger cymbals and stuff and I bought an absolutely wonderful Chinese Cymbal. I used it a great deal on this album. #TimsTwitterListeningParty
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
For me, this photo correctly conveys the intangible, almost mystical intensity we felt in the studio making this record. I feel we gave our all on this. #TimsTwitterListeningParty pic.twitter.com/6A9uqaVE3U
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
As I think I’ve said before, I admire Sylvia Plath’s work. To me, she is among the greatest American writers and poets. My lyrical contributions to Siamese twins reflect that admiration. #TimsTwitterListeningParty

The Figurehead -one of the most satisfying songs for me to play live, the manta of the drum pattern would actually be like meditation. Many people get elevated heartrate going on stage, with me it works the opposite way. I feel much calmer out there. #TimsTwitterListeningParty
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
A strange Day: Phil used several channels on the desk to play drones we recorded on tape. Then at the start, he mixes them together to create that great droning entrance . #TimsTwitterListeningParty
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
Pensive and deep in thought. It was that kind of recording session #TimsTwitterListeningParty pic.twitter.com/bkRyRGJAMY
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
Cold: My favorite start to any Cure song! Robert’s cello intro into my drums always sends a shiver down my spine! The great crashing cymbal was the Chinese cymbal I got from Ray Man. I loved that thing but I think it caused some hearing loss! So loud! #TimsTwitterListeningParty
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
Before laptops were a thing …Or even invented! Robert typing out the words ( or maybe our drinks order for that night ? haha!) #TimsTwitterListeningParty pic.twitter.com/6Q1Dnz8VPA

3/4 It was hot that night in La belle France..#TimsTwitterListeningParty pic.twitter.com/Qzku8Rhopr
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
4/4 I wonder whatever happened to my custom Chrome Pearl kit? lost in the mists of time. Notice the Chinese cymbal from Ray man a beautiful sound but so LOUD! …#TimsTwitterListeningParty pic.twitter.com/y3dfvdTKoZ
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
Pornography: The voices at the beginning we taped from the TV in the studio and then Phil sonically mangled them. The only words you can make out are „poor joe“ which live I used as the cue to start playing the drum pattern. #TimsTwitterListeningParty
— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) October 10, 2020
Thank you, Tim, and every one of you that came to the party. Thank you for walking with me on that path again. It’s been my privilege to be here with you all today. I will see you again real soon. Be well. Be safe. Love Lolx #TimsTwitterListeningParty
